In December there are two certainty: Christmas and Pantone color of the year announcement!
Pantone revealed the color of the year 2021: not just one color but two: Ultimate Gray (Pantone 17-5104) and Illuminating Yellow (Pantone 13-0647).
The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock-solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.
Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute
The two colors of the year are independent but they mix perfectly. Gray is a perfect neutral while yellow can add color accents and lead the decor.
This is not the first time that Pantone presents two colors of the year, it had already happened in 2016 with Rosa Quarzo and Azzurro Serenity.
The Pantone Color Institute comes to the choice of the color of the year through cross studies between economic, social, trends, artistic research…
I was very curious to know how Pantone would have interpreted the uncertainty of this unprecedented historical moment.
For over 20 years, the color that Pantone declares “Color of the Year” has influenced the various fields of fashion, design, interiors and graphic design.
I was expecting an embracing, calm, relaxing, welcoming color: gray certainly falls into this type of color. But they didn’t stop there! In fact, in addition to the “calm”, solid gray – it immediately makes you think of concrete, (and let’s face it, also a bit of pajama gray!), Pantone has added a bright color, Illuminating yellow, vibrant and bright.
I think it’s a beautiful message, an injection of positivity and energy. We need it!
Let’s hope for the best in 2021!
