The foundry was found in Milan in 1870. The casters Menescardi, Austoni and Figini took over it and named it by their names. In foundry artist and caster are two different figures. The artist makes the model and the caster has to realize it accurately. In these foundry they work with the XIX Century investment casting techinique. Here you can see the entire process: from the artist model to the finished sculpture.

In 2000 M.A.F. foundry moved into this warehouse in Pioltello near Milan. This is a huge space where steel spans let me think to an aisle: it’s a sort of holy place for art and craft. The capable hands of master craftsman realize sculptures from models made by the most famous Italian and international artists.

It’s really interesting see the relation between artist and caster. Sometimes this is a life time relationship. The know how of these men let this work go on.

Not just master craftsman hands keep the memory but also the tools. On those there are layers of wax, plaster and clay. Tools become sculptures themselves.

L’arte pervade ogni cosa, il saper fare artigiano è linfa vitale.

Art is in everything here. During the metal casting there is a sort of Dantesque atmosphere
