20 days left for the Milan Design Week: Salone and Fuorisalone are ready to rock the city. A peaceful and beautiful invasion in the name of design. Last year, between Salone del Mobile at Rho Fiera and Fuorisalone around Milan, there were 500,000 presences from 188 countries.
9-14 April 2019 Milan will be the place to be, great design, creative energy and lots of inspiration.
Here is a preview of all the events, district by district, you cannot miss during the Milan Design Week:
Brera Design District
This will be the 10th edition of the Brera Design District. Here there will be many events and locations not to be missed.
Take note of this address: Palermo 1. The Brera Design Apartment (3rd floor) this year will be designed by Cristina Celestino. Her project Planetarium is inspired by space and the underwater world. In the same building in via Palermo 1 you’ll find also The Socialite Family, a “Parisian” apartment in Milan, and PalermoUno, the gallery-apartment and Le Botteghe su Gologone, a collection that combines contemporary design and traditions of Sardinian Barbagia.
Another address that is always worth exploring is via Solferino 11, here: Dimore Studio, Boffi, Paola C… get lost in temporary locations and showrooms.
This year the Dutch brand Moooi will debut in the Brera Design District in the beautiful location of the Mediateca Santa Teresa (via Moscova 28), Artek (via Lovani0 6), HEAD, Genève, Haute école d’art et de design (via Goito 7), Hem (corso Garibaldi 117), Maisons du Monde (via Palermo 16), MT Masking Tape (via Ciovasso 17), DcomeDesign Reloaded (Biblioteca Umanistica di Santa Maria Incoronata, corso Garibaldi 116), Memphis (Largo Treves 5).
Don’t miss these locations: La Permanente, Palazzo Cusani, Palazzo Clerici, the Orto Botanico and the Accademia di Brera.

5vie
The 2019 edition of the 5vie district is dedicated to the work of Ugo La Pietra. His exhibition Territorial Design, Genius Loci in via Cesare Correnti 14 will show how the traditional Italian know-how meets design.
Masterly – The Dutch in Milano, unmissable! The beauty of Palazzo Turati (via Meravigli 7) will move you! This year there will also be a pop up store of Dutch design at Corso Como 10 concept store.
Palazzo Litta – another event you can’t miss: The Litta Variations (corso Magenta 24).
In the underground spaces of the SIAM – Society of Encouragement of Arts and Crafts (via Santa Marta 18), Human Code by Roberto Sironi, will be a reflection about human development and 300,000 years of evolution.
Among the narrowest and oldest streets of Milan don’t miss: the courtyards of via Santa Marta 15 with the Paravicini pottery workshop, the Oratorio della Passione di Sant’Ambrogio. For the first time the Church of San Bernardino alle Monache will also be opened (via Lanzone).
Near Sant’Ambrogio don’t miss the Rossana Orlandi‘s gallery (via Bandello 14).
The Seletti’s Design Pride will be back: on Wednesday 10 April, at 6pm from Piazza Castello (corner of Via Minghetti) to Piazza Affari.
Duomo / San Babila
Super news of this year: Palazzo delle Meraviglie at the Bagatti Valsecchi Museum (via Gesù 5) and the opening of Giuseppe Verdi’s Rooms at the Grand Hotel and de Milan (via Manzoni 29) with Vito Nesta’s Musica da viaggio.
Tom Dixon will open his restaurant and showroom TheManzoni (via Manzoni 5).
Don’t miss Palazzo Belgiojoso (via Morigi 9) with the exhibition Riflesso Botanico.
In the former cinema Arti (via Pietro Mascagni 8): Interstellar, the new furnishings and fabrics by Dimorestudio.
Cos will be back at Palazzo Isimbardi (corso Monforte 35) with a 3D printed installation by the French architect Arthur Mamou Mani.
At Palazzo Reale The Art Side of Kartell will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the brand, while in Piazza Duomo the great installation Maestà Sofferente by Gaetano Pesce will be a tribute to 50 years of the UP chair by B&B Italia.
Università Statale di Milano (via Festa del Perdono 7): Interni Human Spaces.
I can’t wait to see the installation by Piuarch studio: the Forest of Violins, a tribute to the centenary forest in Val di Fiemme swept away by bad weather last fall. Two large spruce logs will emerge suspended from the loggia of the courtyard university.
The Interni event will be open from 8 to 19 April.
Via Durini, corso Monforte, Largo Augusto… this is also the area of the most historic design showrooms: De Padova, Cappellini, Flos, Arper, Cassina, Nemo,B&B Italia, Baxter, Driade, Gervasoni…
Ventura Centrale
In the former spaces of Stazione Centrale warehouses, returns the third edition of Ventura Centrale (via Ferrante Aporti 27). 17 maxi installations you can’t miss! This year will be a strong Japanese presence, Maarten Baas with a special project, Freitag (yes, those of the bags), Rapt Studio with the interactive installation Tell me more… be prepared to be amazed!
New this year: in the Sala Reale of Stazione Centrale (don’t miss it, it’s very rarely opened!) Austrian design with Pleasure & Treasure.
This year the Wallpaper * Handmade event will be in the Stazione Centrale/Porta Venezia area, at the Salone dei Tessuti (via San Gregorio 29). Among the many protagonists, I am very curious to discover the Isko installation, leader in the denim fabric production, Denim Sound Texture: what sound does denim have? this installation will reveal it!
Ventura Future
This year Ventura Future will be in the Tortona district at BASE (via Bergognone 34). Young designers, the best academies and school of design and the most unconventional brands will show the most interesting researches and innovations with a great focus on bio-design and design for the future.

You will find me here at Ventura Future as “confessor” … students and young designers will have the chance to “confess” their doubts and questions that they never had the courage to ask!
News: this year Ventura Future will have an entrance fee: 5 euros. Tickets are already on sale online (they expect long queues, buy them online!).
The Tortona district counts a flow of 200,000 visitors, they have to select the audience.
Tortona District
This year I’m the mediapartner of Ventura Centrale and Ventura Future and also of the whole Tortona district.
Tortona will be a very interesting district! Many events and big brands including Ikea (Torneria, via Tortona 32 – where new speakers collection will be world premiere with a lighting and sound installation) and Lexus (their Design Award is totally not to be missed!).
At Superstudio Più, Superdesign Show Innovation&Tradition: 13.000 mq of exhibition. Normann Copenhagen, Lexus, LG Electronics – with the first rollable TV in the world and an installation signed by Sir Norman Foster’s studio! – Japan Loves Superstudio, Korea Craft & Design Foundation… and the Materials Village.
Tortona Rocks
Opificio 31 is the other main address of the Tortona district: Archiproducts Apartment, Paola Navone studio, Belgium is Design, Hyundai (in collaboration with Monocle), Peugeot Design Lab, Citroën…
Other events in Tortona district: Outspoken Design Language, at nhow Hotel (via Tortona 35), don’t miss the technology exhibition by Sony Affinity in Autonomy at Spazio Zegna about the future of robotics (Savona 56/A), Norwegian Presence (via Savona 35), Savona18 suites – boutique hotel designed by Aldo Cibic and the Aesthetics of Vitality exhibition about his work. At Tenhoa (via Vigevano 18) an installation will represent the concept of air… the only one who can do it? Nendo! At Tenhoa will be on sale – only during the Design Week – its 2D mini-bears BE@RBRICK.
Corso Venezia
The beautiful buildings of Corso Venezia will be locations during the Fuorisalone: Palazzo Bovara, Palazzo Bocconi, Palazzo Serbelloni, Villa Mozart – with the Doppia Firma exhibition, l’ex seminario Arcivescovile…
At the Istituto dei ciechi (via Vivaio 7) Wonderglass will present the new collection Melt, designed by Nendo.
Isola Design District
At the Stecca 3.0 (via Gaetano de Castillia 26) there will be the first 3D printed bar and other events, Japanese design at Fonderia Napoleonica Eugenia (via Genova Thaon di Revel 21), Milan Design Market (via Pastrengo 14), Milan Icons will present the most iconic buildings of Milan into miniature reproductions …
In the Isola Design District there will be also two design academy: from Denmark, the students of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation (KADK) will present Different Bodies about design applied to disability (via Pastrengo 7), students of Art&Design University of Lapland will investigate the relationship between the Arctic environment and its sustainable lifestyle (via Confalonieri 11).
At the Fabbrica del Vapore (via Procaccini 4) Unduetrestella is an event dedicated to kids design.
Triennale
In addition to the XXII Triennale dedicated to sustainability and the relationship between man and the environment – so many interesting ideas and thoughts about green design! – (it will stay open until September, if you have little time during the Fuorisalone, come back another time), during the Design Week will be present the new Museum of Italian Design.
Castello Sforzesco
Piazza Castello: DDN Phutura, 10,000mq exhibition space focused on green design and sustainability.
IDD – Innovation Design District
Among the skyscrapers of Piazza Gae Aulenti the theme will be The Hospitable city. Icon Design Talks of Icon Design magazine will be held at the Riccardo Catella Foundation.
At the CasaFacile Design Lab workshops and styling academy entirely free!
No-Lo
For the second year 40 designers will take the former industrial spaces of Alcova (via Popoli Uniti 11-13) and Fabbrica Sassetti (via Sassetti 31). Don’t miss it!
The Eindhoven Design Academy will present Geo-Design exhibition about Alibaba, the largest shopping platform in the world (via Marco Aurelio 21).
Bovisa/Dergano
The Republic of Design will be a new district in the Bovisa / Dergano area.
Other addresses
Among the events you can’t miss outside the famous districts there are the Marni event (viale Umbria 42), this year it will be inspired by man on the moon; the De Rerum Natura exhibition at Cascina Cuccagna (via Cuccagna 2/4) and Paola Lenti, Fabbrica Orobia (via Orobia 15).
Salone del Mobile
The 58th edition of Salone del Mobile will be held in the Rho Fiera pavilions. There will be the biennials Euroluce, dedicated to lighting, and Workplace 3.0, dedicated to office furniture. This year, however, the novelty is a widespread and transversal display mode for Workplace 3.0. The office furniture is less and less “office” and increasingly hybrid between professional and personal use, so the exhibition will be distributed in the various pavilions.
In Halls 22 and 24 (free admission) the SaloneSatellite will be animated by 550 young designers who this year will talk about the theme “Food as a Design Object”.
The Salone del Mobile at the Rho fair will be open to the public on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 April.
Leonardo 500 years
Aqua. Leonardo Vision. This is the event of the Salone del Mobile in the city. The installation will transform the Conca dell’Incoronata (via San Marco, Brera) in a kind of futuristic Naviglio. Curated by Marco Balich.
Also at the fair there will be a tribute to the 500 years since the death of Leonardo da Vinci with the video installation De-Signo. The culture of Italian design before and after Leonardo, curated by Davide Rampello (Hall 24).
The Ippodromo di San Siro will host scale reproductions of Leonardo’s Horse reinvented byInternational artists and designers.
Within the Isola Design District, the tribute to Leonardo’s genius will be a tour that combines botany, architecture, eco-design and nature (Stecca 3.0 garden, via Gaetano de Castillia 26).
