Buon anno Capre!! Grandi festeggiamenti in Oriente!

Happy new year Goats! I mean, this is the year of the Goat! Today is the Chinese new year or Spring Festival. Big celebrations at East! Do you know which are the great celebration of the world? Those in Hong Kong! Today I’m going to tell you about our trip to Hong Kong even if it was three years ago. It was the last part of our Honey Moon after beautiful beach time in Fiji Islands! It was mid December… plenty of Christmas even if there “Christmas” means not very much!

Hong Kong is an incredible city! The Chinese traditional soul lives side by side with the Western and modern one. Amazing skyscrapers and ancient temples. The city is squeezed between the sea and the Peak, the mountain where there are the most expensive houses of the world. Here English officials in XIX built here their mansions since 1841 trying to find some relief from the hot summers. Hong Kong is an island but it also includes Kowloon. We stayed at the Icon Hotel in Kowloon. It was built by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University with an archistar. They built an amazing building. Lower floors are used by the University while the hotel rooms are located on the higher floors. The hotel lobby has the biggest “green wave” – vertical garden – in the world. We stayed at the hotel just few days after the opening and we enjoyed the Icon experience very much. Hotel location is very good because it is a few steps from the Victoria Harbour promenade just in front of Hong Kong Island.

Davvero emozionante!

Every evening at 8 p.m. at the Harbour there is the famous Hong Kong lights show  “A Symphony of Lights”. Hong Kong skyscrapers literally come alive. There is a speaker that announces each building that lights up with the music. Really exciting!

Temperatura perfetta!

This is the best introduction to Hong Kong. In every public spot (toilets, elevators, underground trains and stations…) there are signs stating how often the location is cleaned and sanitized. Everyone wears eye masks – while in Japan they do this for the other safety, here they do for their own safety! The traffic here is heavy, there are red taxis everywhere! Lots of billboards, neon signs and air-conditionings! During the Summer the hot is terrible here! When we were there it was like Spring, perfect temperatures!

They have a really peculiar pedestrian mobility on boardwalks. If you like, you can go around the city without exit in the open air! Underground stations, malls, offices, shops and buildings are connected. Every mall has its own entry directly in the underground station.

Let’s talk about Hong Kong malls… they are far away from what we call “mall”. Their malls are huge and have luxury stores like Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Prada, Hermes, Tiffany… every shopping center has these same shops and you can also find these brands in shopping streets around the city. I don’t know how many flagship stores for each brand there are in Hong Kong! Hong Kong is duty free and so people come from all around Asia to have some good shopping.

You can taste the real Hong Kong in the markets. There are lot of markets around the city and you can find everything: fruits, vegetables, flowers, birds, fishes, meat, undefined dehydrated things… lots of stuff! This is the most funny thing! English is the official language but when you walk out of the center is not easy find someone who speaks it! It’s all about gestures! Everything is more complicated when you have to face the real Hong Kong street food with a great variety of strange animal they eat… shark’s fins or flying lizards are just an example!

It’s really a nice experience to take the Star Ferry to cross the Victoria Harbour with a great view! The financial area with skyscrapers is very crowded. In this district there is the Hong Kong Bank Building – HSBC, this building was designed by Norman Foster in 1985 at the cost of 1 billion dollars, the most expensive building of that time.

In Hong Kong contemporary architecture and engineering must always match the Feng Shui. For this reason the Bank of China had lot of disapprovals – I love it – the structure was too much sharp and this should be a bad luck premonition. Because of that the Bank of China decided to have all around the building water, carps, green… and the building opened on the 8/8/’88 the most lucky day of the XX Century!

Green spaces and skyscrapers are tightly integrated. There is a big botanical and zoological garden really near to the financial district. In the Hong Kong Park you can walk over the trees watching colored birds and parrots!

Another Hong Kong curiosity: the longest escalator in the world… not far from the financial district roads become narrow and steep, so you can take a ride on the escalator to reach the highest part of the city. It’s a great thing that city council subsidizes locals to go by feet to avoid “traffic”. You have money back just swiping your Octopus Card. The Octopus Card is a really cool idea: you can use it as credit card, metro card or even as I.D.!

The Peak. The view from here is amazing! You can go there by “tram” or by a 5 kilometers walk. You can see the whole city and Kowloon too. It’s wonderful! This is the most luxurious residential neighborhood with some of the most expensive houses in the world! It’s amazing how the tropical forest meets the skyscrapers. You can see eagles fly… it’s like a tropical New York!

We also went to Lantau, an island near Hong Kong. It’s also named “the green island” because it’s still quite wild. Let’s say that they give to the world “wild” a weird meaning… we arrived there by train and we find ourselves in a huge mall between the biggest condos we have ever seen. Lantau is famous for its big Buddha statue and for the Po Lin monastery. Hong Kong is much more than shopping and malls!
