Bonsai literally means “tree in a bowl”<\/strong> and symbolizes the universe, life and strength of nature. The miniature trees are created to spark the emotions of nature in the audience.<\/p>\n

Do you know that bonsai have companion plants?<\/h4>\n

I don’t know much\u00a0about the world of bonsai but when I was\u00a0a child I was extremely fascinated by them and for several years at my birthday I asked a bonsai as gift and one is still there, he has lost some of his identity but is happy at my parents’ house!<\/p>\n

Some time ago I visited\u00a0a bonsai exhibition\u00a0and I was fascinated by the presence of these small side plants. While you are reading this blogpost I am traveling to Japan, so it seems the perfect topic to get there together…\u00a0I obviously take everyone in Japan with me, follow me on\u00a0Instagram<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Facebook<\/a>!<\/p>\n

These are some curiosities I’ve discovered about bonsai companion plants:<\/p>\n

A companion plant (or accent plant)<\/strong> can be a flowering plant, bamboo, grass, ferns, a variety of musk or even some mushrooms. Depends on the season and the Bonsai style.<\/strong> They are called kusamono \u8349 \u7269 or shitakusa \u4e0b \u8349<\/strong> which literally means “herbaceous object” and “grass that stay underneath”.\u00a0 They have to accentuate the bonsai tree on display and create a sense of harmony.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Choosing the right companion plant is not\u00a0easy, you have to\u00a0follow very precise rules<\/strong>: it can represent Spring in case the bonsai is made up of an evergreen plant, it can be an herb that in nature grows in the same bonsai environment, if the bonsai has flowers or fruits the companion plant will not have them, there must be no repetition.<\/p>\n

Even its shape is never accidental<\/strong>: it can have vertical or through the bonsai course, never outward. Pots\u00a0– always without edges – have to\u00a0resemble the colors of the bonsai and its flowering and the height of the companion plant can not\u00a0exceed the one of the bonsai support.<\/p>\n

A successful companion planting is beautiful in its own right, but should not become the dominant part. Usually bonsai has a three-pieced display<\/strong> – bonsai tree, a scroll (finely painted) and an accent plant – that represents respectively\u00a0men, heaven and earth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Bonsai art\u00a0is\u00a0so charming\u00a0and full of history that reveals so much about\u00a0Japanese culture. We can only admire it! If you walk into a bonsai\u00a0nursery or a\u00a0bonsai exhibition, do not miss the opportunity\u00a0step in this amazing world!<\/p>\n
