You can do analysis to find out if you have the BRCA1<\/strong>, the\u00a0breast cancer gene<\/strong>. Once you discover what you can do? You can take a lifetime of tamoxifen treatment<\/strong> or decide for a preventive mastectomy<\/strong> (as Angelina Jolie did).<\/p>\n

Tamoxifen is taken orally\u00a0and unfortunately it\u00a0prevents breast cancer but involves an incredible series of negative side effects<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Sarah da Costa<\/strong>\u00a0worked for years in pharmaceutical until one day she decided to take the path of design enrolling in Material Futures master at Central Saint Martins, one of the best design schools in the world.<\/p>\n

Her\u00a0graduation project is outstanding: she created an anticancer bra<\/strong> able to deliver tamoxifen through the skin<\/strong> to exactly where it\u2019s needed with no more\u00a0side effects<\/strong> of the drug.<\/p>\n

Tamoxifen is derived from the Foxglove plant<\/a>\u00a0from here the idea to\u00a0microencapsulated the drug in\u00a0leave\u00a0shape,\u00a0they are designed to last for one month before they\u00a0need replacing and are entirely biodegradable.

In this way the medicine is released continuously and directly where it\u2019s needed through the skin. Now they are running\u00a0medical tests and will take probably about other 3 years to place the bra\u00a0on the market. I think this is a<\/strong> revolutionary invention<\/strong> and it opens new chance to\u00a0many other treatments and diseases.

The Futures Material MA<\/strong> is one of\u00a0the most popular master from which come the ‘inventions’ that will change the future. A two-year course where they\u00a0bet on research, where they\u00a0create and test new materials<\/strong>. Each year the Central Saint Martins exhibits the most interesting projects at the Fuorisalone in Milan, this year they will be present in Ventura Lambrate. Go and look for them, you will undoubtedly find exciting projects!<\/p>\n

The dictionary defines “design” as\u00a0“the design of an object that aims to synthesize functionality and aesthetics”<\/em>, it is much more to me: design shapes our lives and can make them better. Now it can even save our lives.<\/strong><\/p>\n
