TWA Flight Center<\/strong>, il terminal della Trans World Airlines, oggi Terminal 5 dell\u2019areoporto JFK di New York<\/strong>, fu uno dei terminal pi\u00f9 rappresentativi del periodo soprannominato la \u201cJet Age\u201d, epoca del boom dei voli arei a lungo raggio con i primi aerei con motori a turbina come li conosciamo oggi.<\/p>\n

The Trans World Airlines terminal<\/strong>, today terminal 5 of the JFK Airport of New York<\/strong> city, was one of the most representative airport of the world during the \u201cJet Age\u201d with a great boom of flights. This was the beginning of the transoceanic flights with\u00a0jet airplanes\u00a0as we know today.<\/em><\/p>\n

Aperto nel 1962<\/strong> fu disegnato da Eero Saarinen<\/strong>, architetto e designer finlandese. La sua forma emblematica ad ali rappresenta una delle prime strutture a guscio di \u201cconchiglia\u201d, interamente realizzata in cemento armato autoportante permise di avere all\u2019interno grandi spazi aperti con grande libert\u00e0 di organizzazione.<\/p>\n

The TWA terminal opened in 1962<\/strong> and it was designed by the Finnish architect and designer Eero Saarinen<\/strong>. It is an emblematic construction, with its shape suggestive of a bird. It represents an entirely different approach than the thin concrete shells constructed at the same time to span a space with a minimum of material.<\/em><\/p>\n

Pensando all\u2019avvento del turismo di massa Saarinen lo concep\u00ec per velocizzare tutti i processi. Fu uno dei primi terminal forniti di finger<\/strong> per l\u2019imbarco dei passeggeri, nastri per il ritiro bagagli<\/strong>, tabellone elettronico<\/strong> per i voli. Questo tabellone emblematico \u00e8 tutt\u2019oggi rappresentativo e futuristico. Sicuramente viaggiare in aereo negli anni \u201960 era emozionante e questo futuristico terminal deve aver reso tutto pi\u00f9 affascinante.<\/p>\n

With an eye to the advent of mass tourism, Saarinen conceived the terminal to speeding up processes. This was one of the first terminal with jetways<\/strong> for the bording, baggage carousels<\/strong> and electronic schedule boards<\/strong>. This boards in particular was very representative of the space age. Surely in the 60\u2019s travelling by planes was exciting and this futuristic terminal could add lots of charm to the flight.<\/em><\/p>\n

In quegli anni la TWA con la PanAm era una delle compagnie pi\u00f9 importanti americane e mondiali. Negli anni \u201940 era controllata da Howard Hughes, \u00e8 stata in seguito acquistata dall\u2019American Airlines.<\/p>\n

In those years TWA and PanAm were the most important airlines in Usa and in the world. In the \u201840s it was directed by Howard Hughes, and then it was acquired\u00a0by American Airlines.<\/em><\/p>\n

Gi\u00e0 negli anni \u201960 i terminal degli areoporti<\/strong> erano esempi di architettura per cui venivano chiamate \u201carchi-star\u201ded erano esempi non solo per la ricerca di innovazione estetica ma anche funzionale<\/strong>, cercando soluzioni sempre nuove per venire in contro al flusso sempre maggiore di viaggiatori.<\/p>\n

In the \u201860s already \u201carchi-stars\u201d designed airports<\/strong> because these were place with innovative researches about shapes and functional solutions<\/strong>. They have to be ready for the upcoming traffic.<\/em><\/p>\n

Il TWA Flight Center \u00e8 stato chiuso nell\u2019ottobre 2001 perch\u00e9 non era pi\u00f9 funzionale ma la sua estetica \u00e8 ancora forte e futurista. Dopo un periodo di abbandono ora \u00e8 stato ristrutturato mantenendo tutto com\u2019era<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The TWA Flight Center was shut down in October 2001 because it was no more functional but his shape is still emblematic and futuristic. After a periode of disuse now it is renovate with great conservative attention<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n
