Internet \u00e8 uno strumento potentissimo che fa scoprire\u00a0storie bellissime<\/strong>. Qualche tempo fa, ho ricevuto\u00a0una mail da una lettrice di Gucki\u00a0che mi ha rallegrato la giornata. Come sempre per caso, \u00e8\u00a0venuto fuori\u00a0che il suo fidanzato \u00e8 un designer che lavora con\u00a0il cemento.<\/p>\n

Come non voler scoprire di pi\u00f9? E cos\u00ec ho fatto una bella chiacchierata con Ewan Allan<\/strong>, designer scozzese e mente creativa dietro a FourEightEight<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Il materiale d’elezione di Ewan \u00e8 il cemento<\/strong> e il suo progetto che preferisco \u00e8 il Concrete Sofa<\/strong>.\u00a0Sembra un divano comodo e soffice ed invece \u00e8 interamente in cemento, perfetto anche all’aperto. Geniale!<\/p>\n

Ewan \u00e8 un ottimo esempio di chi trova il coraggio di lasciare una strada conosciuta e sicura per l’incerto, con il coraggio di perseguire un sogno e cercare la felicit\u00e0<\/strong>. Bravo Ewan, che sia d’ispirazione a molti!<\/p>\n

The Internet is a powerful tool that let you discover great stories<\/strong>. Some time ago, I received an e-mail from a reader of the blog, so nice of her!\u00a0It turned out that her boyfriend is a Scottish designer who works with concrete<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Immediately I wanted to find out more, I’m curious, you know! I had a lovely chat with Ewan Allan<\/strong>, the designer and creative mind behind FourEightEight<\/strong><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Ewan’s favorite material\u00a0is concrete<\/strong> and his\u00a0project\u00a0I like most is\u00a0the Concrete Sofa<\/strong>. It looks like a comfy and soft sofa but instead it is entirely made with concrete, perfect even outdoor. Brilliant!<\/em><\/p>\n

Ewan is a great example of someone who finds the courage to leave a safe street for the uncertain, to pursue his dream looking for happiness<\/strong>. Bravo Ewan, that you may be\u00a0an inspiration to many!<\/em><\/p>\n

D. Perch\u00e9 hai scelto proprio il cemento?<\/strong>
\nR.<\/strong> Se guardi da vicino qualsiasi pezzo di cemento vedrai dettagli bellissimi. Non importa che sia un muro di cemento in un vecchio bunker di Berlino o un piano in una casa super lussuosa. Lo adoro! Una delle cose che apprezzo di pi\u00f9 \u00e8 che con il cemento si pu\u00f2 realizzare qualsiasi cosa a partire da uno stampo. All’inizio \u00e8 allo stato liquido e poi, poco per volta, si solidifica. Questo mi permette di\u00a0spaziare quanto voglio\u00a0con la creativit\u00e0!<\/p>\n

D. Quando hai deciso di lavorare con il cemento?<\/strong>
\nR.<\/strong> Circa 4 anni fa non ero contento del mio lavoro e cos\u00ec mi sono licenziato per provare a fare qualcosa che volessi veramente. Creare cose con le proprie mani d\u00e0 davvero molta soddisfazione!<\/p>\n

D. Qual \u00e8 il primo pezzo di design che hai realizzato?<\/strong>
\nR.<\/strong> Quando avevo 5 anni a scuola c’era una gara, bisognava disegnare una tazza con un pulcinella di mare. Il mio disegno vinse e venne stampato su tazze che vennero vendute in tutta la Scozia!<\/p>\n

D. Mi piace tantissimo la tua palette colori! Qual \u00e8 il colore pi\u00f9 richiesto?<\/strong>
\nR.<\/strong> Il classico grigio-cemento. Cosa posso dire? Si vede che le persone vogliono che il cemento sembri proprio cemento!<\/p>\n

Q. Why are you in love with concrete?<\/strong><\/em>
\nA.<\/strong> If you look closely enough at any piece of concrete you can find something beautiful. It doesn\u2019t matter if it\u2019s the concrete walls in a neglected bunker in Berlin or a polished worktop in a multi-million Euro home, I love it all.\u00a0Probably the best part about concrete is it can be moulded to become anything. It starts as a liquid, sets as hard as stone and just keeps getting harder. This lets you be as creative as you want.<\/em><\/p>\n

Q. When do you decide to be committed with it?<\/strong><\/em>
\nA.<\/strong> About 4 years ago I was working on a job I was unhappy with so I decided to quit and go after something that I wanted to do instead. Making things from scratch is very satisfying!<\/em><\/p>\n

Q. What was the first piece of design you made?<\/strong><\/em>
\nA.<\/strong> When I was 5 there was a competition at school to design a mug with a puffin bird on it. My drawing won and it was printed on mugs for sale all over Scotland.<\/em><\/p>\n

Q. I love your concrete color palette! What is the most requested color?<\/strong><\/em>
\nA.<\/strong> The most requested colour is just plain old concrete grey. What can I say? I guess people just want concrete to look like concrete.<\/em><\/p>\n

D. Come ti \u00e8 venuta l’idea di creare un divano in cemento?<\/strong>
\nR.<\/strong>\u00a0Volevo realizzare un prodotto che si potesse vendere “facilmente”, cos\u00ec, valutando le mie capacit\u00e0 tecniche, ho deciso di provare a creare un divano. L’ho realizzato interamente da solo, dallo stampo fino all’impasto del cemento. \u00c9 molto divertente vedere la faccia delle persone quando lo toccano e capiscono che \u00e8 duro! Una volta per\u00f2 un anziano signore si \u00e8 seduto con troppo slancio… non ne \u00e8 rimasto entusiasta!<\/p>\n

D. Come hai scelto questo esatto modello di divano?<\/strong>
\nR.<\/strong> Lo stile \u00e8 tra le cose che mi piace di pi\u00f9 di questo progetto. A casa ne ho uno proprio uguale nel mio salotto. Ho realizzato lo stampo comprandone un altro perch\u00e9 purtroppo nel processo l’originale \u00e8 andato distrutto!<\/p>\n

Q. How did the idea of the sofa came to your mind?<\/strong><\/em>
\nA.<\/strong> Starting my business I needed a \u2018big\u2019 commercial product,\u00a0I knew it had to be furniture of some kind so I took a look at what I can do with my skills and came up with this sofa. I do it all myself, from making the mould to casting the concrete.\u00a0It really amazes people when they touch it and its solid! I\u2019ve had one older gentleman upset because he sat down too fast!<\/em><\/p>\n

Q. Why did you choose that exactly style of the sofa?<\/strong><\/em>
\nA.<\/strong> This style of sofa is one of my favourite designs. I have a real, soft one at home in my living room. To make the mould I had to get another one because the original gets destroyed in the process.<\/em><\/p>\n

D. Dove sogni di vedere i tuoi lavori un giorno?<\/strong>
\nR.<\/strong> Mi piacerebbe vederli in giro per il mondo ma anche vicino a casa!\u00a0Magari in qualche famosa attrazione in Scozia. Sarebbe bello poter\u00a0dire ai miei amici “questo l’ho fatto io!”<\/p>\n

D. C’\u00e8 qualcosa che ti piacerebbe realizzare in cemento che ancora non hai fatto?<\/strong>
\nR.<\/strong> Molte cose! Il mio prossimo progetto sar\u00e0 un’intera scacchiera con pedine in cemento. Mi piacerebbe anche lavorare con il legno. Proprio a fianco al mio laboratorio c’\u00e8 una\u00a0segheria, magari\u00a0potremmo creare una collaborazione, chi lo sa, magari un tavolo!<\/p>\n

L’architettura \u00e8 una grande fonte d’ispirazione per me<\/strong>, probabilmentedevo ringraziare di questo il mio insegnante di arte a scuola, Mr. Kenny. \u00c8 stato lui ad introdurmi al Bauhaus e<\/strong> al Brutalismo<\/strong>. Mi affascinano molto gli edifici in cemento del periodo sovietico. Quando la gente viaggia vuole vedere le principali attrazioni, io invece adoro girare per le citt\u00e0 e osservare le costruzioni in cemento!<\/p>\n

Q. Where would you dream to see one of your design piece one day?<\/em><\/strong>
\nA.<\/strong> I\u2019d like to see it all around the world! Closer to home, it would mean a lot to me to get something I made into a popular attraction in Scotland. Somewhere I can send my friends to and say ‘I did that\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n

Q. Is there something you would like to realize in concrete that you haven\u2019t yet?<\/em><\/strong>
\nA.<\/strong> Many things! My next project will be a chess set in concrete.\u00a0Also I like working with wood and my workshop is next-door to a sawmill so a chunky wood and concrete project after that. Tables maybe.<\/em><\/p>\n

Architecture is a big inspiration<\/strong> to me too and that\u2019s probably down to my art teacher at school, Mr. Kenny. He introduced me about Bauhaus and Brutalism<\/strong>. Traveling around any country that has been communist at some point is fascinating to me. Everyone wants to go to all the attractions and all I want to do is wander around staring at weird shaped concrete tower blocks.<\/em><\/p>\n
