Margriet Vollenberg<\/strong> \u00e8 l’ideatrice di Ventura Projects, nonch\u00e9 la fondatrice di Organisation in Design, studio di pubbliche relazioni e consulenza per il design. Margriet \u00e8 una donna e professionista che stimo moltissimo, ha una sorta di superpotere. Con i suoi occhi azzurri limpidi e affascinati, inchioda e sa raccontare il design di oggi<\/strong>. Un design che non \u00e8 solo business, ma anche sperimentazione, scoperte e immaginazione<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Dal 2010 ha contributo in prima persona\u00a0alla riqualificazione della zona Ventura-Lambrate<\/strong>. Grazie alla sua visione, in collaborazione con l’architetto Mariano Pichler, oggi\u00a0Ventura District<\/strong> \u00e8 l’area pi\u00f9 fresca e nuova di tutto il Salone del Mobile<\/a> e Fuorisalone<\/a>. Il progetto\u00a0ha avuto talmente successo che ormai \u00e8 un prodotto di esportazione: Ventura \u00e8 anche a Londra, Berlino e\u00a0Kortrijk in Belgio<\/strong>. Questa primavera ha addirittura attraversato l’oceano<\/strong> per sbarcare a New York<\/strong>\u00a0e prendere parte alla Design Week.<\/p>\n

Ventura Project, come ben sapete, ha un posto speciale nel mio cuore, ha una forza travolgente che mi affascina profondamente.\u00a0Qualche tempo fa ho avuto l’onore di fare una piccola chiacchierata con Margriet e abbiamo parlato di com’\u00e8 andata la conquista dell’America. Ecco la nostra intervista.<\/strong><\/p>\n

—<\/p>\n

Margriet Vollenberg<\/strong> is the creator of Ventura Projects, as well as the founder of Organisation in Design, Dutch PR studio and design consultancy. I admire very much Margriet, she has a kind of superpower. With her beautiful and clear blue eyes she nails you and she’s able to show you the design of today<\/strong>. She has a wide vision of design, it is not only business, but also experimentation, discovery and imagination.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Since 2010 she gave a huge\u00a0contribution to the renovation of the Ventura-Lambrate district<\/strong>. Thanks to her vision, in collaboration with the architect Mariano Pichler, now Ventura District<\/strong> is the most fresh and new area at\u00a0the Salone del Mobile and Fuorisalone. The project has been so successful that it has been exported: Ventura today is also in London, Berlin and Kortrijk in Belgium<\/strong>. This spring it\u00a0even crossed the ocean going to\u00a0New York<\/strong> to be one of the best event of the Design Week.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ventura Project, as you know, has a special place in my heart, it has an overwhelming force that fascinates me deeply. Some time ago I had the honor to have a little chat with Margriet and we talked about the conquest of America. Here’s our interview.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

D. Cosa ti ha fatto capire che era il momento di attraversare l’oceano e incontrare l’America?<\/strong>
\nR.<\/strong> Ad essere onesti \u00e8 una cosa che avevo in mente da tanto tempo. Era ora che il design contemporaneo olandese andasse a New York! Il mercato si \u00e8 risollevato e New York \u00e8 pronta per incontrare i designer. Cos\u00ec dopo la settima edizione di Ventura Lambrate a Milano ero veramente curiosa di realizzare questo progetto americano!<\/p>\n

—<\/p>\n

Q. What did make you realize that Ventura was ready to cross the ocean and meet America?<\/em><\/strong>
\nA.<\/strong> To be honest, this was something I had in mind for long time. It was really time for Dutch contemporary design to go to New York. The market is better again and New York is ready to meet designers, in this case also Dutch designers. So after the 7th edition of Ventura Lambrate I was really interested in doing this project. This was how I realized we were ready to go to America!<\/em><\/p>\n

D. Come hai scelto i 14 designer che sono venuti con te a New York?
\nR.<\/strong> Mi \u00e8 stato fin da subito chiaro che doveva essere un’edizione olandese. Ci tengo molto a promuovere il design olandese e quando organizzi un’esposizione devi avere un linguaggio semplice. Volevo mostrare una panoramica autentica del vero design olandese contemporaneo. Ho scelto designer che avevano partecipato all’ultima edizione di Ventura Lambrate a Milano, cos\u00ec da offrire un’esperienza interessante a chi vedeva il design ma anche ai designer. Ho scelto designer che non fossero mai stati mostrati in America, per loro \u00e8 stata una vera e propria introduzione. \u00c8 stato complicato trovare un equilibrio tra i 14, ho portato concept designer ma anche product designer, sperimentatori, quasi inventori… Ho diviso i designer in 3 gruppi: Eredit\u00e0 culturale nel design, Processo di lavorazione come prodotto finale, Usi alternativi delle nuove tecnologie. Questi sono i tre temi che il design olandese sta affrontando maggiormente.
\nI. Eredit\u00e0 culturale nel design. Non occorre essere olandesi di nazionalit\u00e0 per essere designer olandesi. Il design olandese \u00e8 definito dal modo con cui si guarda le cose e si usano i materiali.
\nII. Processo di lavorazione come prodotto finale. Mostrare il processo di lavorazione dietro al prodotto finito \u00e8 molto importante per me. \u00c8 quello che mostriamo da anni in Ventura Lambrate. A volte questo processo \u00e8 esso stesso design.
\nIII. Usi alternativi delle nuove tecnologie. Ci sono cos\u00ec tante nuove tecnologie con cui si pu\u00f2 lavorare e sperimentare. Ad esempio la stampa 3D ma anche i biomateriali… queste tecniche oggi sono impiegate anche nel design.<\/p>\n

Q. How did you choose the 14 designers you brought to New York?
\n<\/strong>A.<\/strong> It was immediately clear to me that it would have to be a Dutch edition. I really would like to promote Dutch design there and it\u2019s very important to have a clear language when you exhibit, I wanted to be there with pure Dutch design. It was very important to show an overview of what Dutch design is about nowadays. I chose designer that were recently in Milan exhibiting at the Fuorisalone because in that way you had a sort of experience from those designers and give to their works a sort of a follow up in New York which is very interesting for the designer but for the public also. I chose designers that were never represented in New York. For New York, but for the designers too, it was a very first introduction to each other. It was important to find the right balance between the 14 designers. I brought concept designers but also product designers, designers that work a lot experimenting with materials but also with shapes. In that mix I grouped 3 teams: Cultural inheritance in design, The design process as a final product, Unconventional use of novel technologies. These is what Dutch design is about nowdays.
\n<\/em>I. Cultural inheritance in design. You don\u2019t have to be native born Dutch to be a Dutch designer, Dutch design is how you look at things and what you do with them, what you do with materials and with production method.
\nII. The design process as a final product. Show the process behind the product is very important to me, I\u2019m showing this since many years now in Ventura Lambrate, and sometime the process is the project itself.
\nIII. Unconventional use of novel technologies. There are so many new technologies we can work with, think about 3D printing, but also the use of biomaterials… that\u2019s kind of production materials are now also use in design.<\/em><\/p>\n

D. Il mondo del design a New York \u00e8 differente da quella europea?<\/strong>
\nR.<\/strong> S\u00ec, assolutamente! Il mondo del design New York \u00e8 giovanissimo, appena nato. La New York Design Week (NYCxDesign) esiste da soli 3 o 4 anni (mentre la fiera ICFF esiste da poco pi\u00f9 tempo) e non \u00e8 un grande avvenimento come quella a Milano. Si tratta per\u00f2 New York, una delle location pi\u00f9 importanti del mondo. Molti europei erano presenti a New York ma non tanti americani vengono in Europa per le nostre Design Week. \u00c8 quindi importante essere presenti e mostrare l\u00e0 il nostro design.<\/p>\n

—<\/p>\n

Q. Is the New York design scene different than the European one?
\nA.<\/strong> Yes, it\u2019s absolutely another scene, a very young one. The New York Design week (NYCxDesign) it\u2019s only existing since 3 or 4 years (the fair ICFF existing for a little bit longer). It\u2019s not a big happening like in Milan but the good thing is that New York is a very important location. Everybody knows New York. To have a design week is very important for New York. It\u2019s really a start, it’s growing, \u00a0and this is nice because it can still be shaped. Influencial people were visiting from Europe but there were American that don\u2019t visit European design weeks so it\u2019s important for us show our design there.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

D. Quali erano i tuoi obbiettivi e desideri per la Ventura New York – Dutch Edition? Com’\u00e8 andata?<\/strong>
\nR.<\/strong> Certamente avevo obbiettivi ma sono andata assolutamente aperta alle possibilit\u00e0! Dopo un’ottima edizione a Milano volevamo fare questa esperienza americana. Una sorta di edizione pilota, avevamo speranze certo, ma non grandi aspettative. Speravamo di vendere qualcosa e di raccogliere contatti. Alla fine \u00e8 andata molto, molto, molto meglio di quello che pensavo! Eravamo all’interno della fiera Wanted Design, piccola ma molto ben organizzata. Per lo spirito la potresti paragonare a Ventura Lambrate, solo molto pi\u00f9 piccola. Abbiamo avuto un ottimo pubblico, solo la sera dell’inaugurazione abbiamo raggiunto le 4.000 presenze e durante tutto l’evento siamo arrivati a 16.000. Ottimi numeri per New York dove c’\u00e8 sempre cos\u00ec tanto da fare e da vedere! Solitamente a New York chi partecipa all’opening poi non torna pi\u00f9, invece noi abbiamo avuto molti visitatori che sono tornati nei giorni successivi, si vede che hanno davvero visto qualcosa di interessante! Siamo molto soddisfatti!<\/p>\n

Q. What were your goals and wishes for the Ventura New York – Dutch edition? How did they go?<\/strong><\/em>
\nA.<\/strong> Of course I had goals but I went there complitely open mind. We had a very good edition in Milan then we wanted to try NEW YORK open minded. This was a kind of pilot edition, there were hopes but not high expectations. We had hope to sell something for example and make contacts. New York it\u2019s all about networking. And it was much, much, much better than I expected! The fair we were, Wanted Design, it is a very good fair, it was a lot smaller, but you can compare it to Ventura Lambrate. It is all in one building but with the same kind rebel, young, youthfulness. They attracted a very good public, on the opening evening they had over 4000 people, and 16.000 overall the event. A very good amount for New York during a week where there were so much to do and not just with design. New York is so big and with so many things going on, it is very hard to catch people. Usually in New York who attend the opening night don\u2019t come back again in the other days but we had coing back visitors, so I think they had saw something really interesting! We were really glad!<\/em><\/p>\n

D. Come si sono avvicinati gli americani al design olandese?<\/strong>
\nR.<\/strong> Gli americani e in particolare i New Yorkesi sono semplici da avvicinare, iniziano subito a parlare, chiedono, sono molto veloci, capisci immediatamente se una cosa gli interessa o meno. Abbiamo venduto molte cose e sono nati molti progetti. I nostri designer hanno incontrato collezionisti, galleristi, stylist, arredatori e professionisti che vogliono lavorare con loro. Abbiamo avuto visite anche da musei e diverse scuole prestigiose come la Parsons Academy. \u00c8 stato molto interessante!<\/p>\n

—<\/p>\n

Q. How do you think the American approach Dutch design?<\/strong><\/em>
\nA.<\/strong> American people and in particular people from New York are so easy to approach, they start immediately to talk and they are very fast. They show you immediately if they are interested or not in your work. We sold a lot of things and many projects are going on. A lot of designers met private collectors, stylist, interior designers who want to work with them. We had some very good school like the Parsons Academy but also some museums that showed interested in our products. Even some galleries that immediately had bought works. It was really interesting.<\/em><\/p>\n

D. Dopo New York, dove vedremo Ventura Projects?
\nR.<\/strong> Sicuramente la prossima edizione sar\u00e0 a Kortrijk in Belgio, durante la Biennale Interieur (14-23 ottobre). Saremo presenti per la terza volta di fila con Ventura Interieur. Quest’anno avremo uno spazio espositivo di 250 mq all’interno della fiera e non in citt\u00e0 come abbiamo sempre avuto. Sar\u00e0 molto bello e avremo sicuramente ancora pi\u00f9 visitatori che gli anni passati. Dopo questo non so ancora… ci stiamo lavorando!<\/p>\n

Q. After New York where are we going to see Ventura Projects?<\/strong><\/em>
\nA.<\/strong> For sure our next edition will be in Kortrijk, Belgium, during the Biennale Interieur of Kortrijk (14-23 October). We will be there for the third time in a row with Ventura Interieur. This year we\u2019ll have 250 mq of exhibition space on the fair ground, so not in the city as we always had. This is amazing because we will have even more public than had in the past years.
\nAfter that, we don\u2019t know yet\u2026 still working on!<\/em><\/p>\n
