Spazi enormi, orizzonti infiniti, cieli indimenticabili.

Today is my hubby’s birthday, he is my rational half! One years ago we celebrated his 30 years in Iceland, his soul-place. We have been in Iceland twice and we left there our heart. It’s an amazing place. Nature shows its own strength from ice to volcanos fire. Huge space, infinite horizon, unforgettable sky.

We were very lucky with beautiful but cold sunny days! In 4 days we explored the Reykjavik area, the Reykjanes, through the Golden Circle, the South-West area where there are most famous places of Iceland. Reykjavik is a little and surprising city! I’ve talked you about it here and here and here.

Reykjavik lies between sea and sky. The Hallgrímskirkja stand out against Reykjavik, the icon of the city. From the Hallgrímskirkja top you can admire and outstanding view. On the side of the Hallgrímskirkja there is the Leif Erikson sculpture, he was the first European man who arrived in America about 1000. A sort of Icelandic Christopher Columbus!

This is a very special view with colored roofs and with the typical North light. Daylight hours is shorter during the Winter up to a minimum of 5 hours in December, just to have an idea: the sun rises at 11.20 a.m. and sunset is at 3.45 p.m. In October we had great sunny days, Iceland is very North, in these months the sun doesn’t rise up to the Zenith but it’s quite low on the horizon having beautiful and clear light.

Near the harbor area there is the concert hall Harpa, built in 2011 in co-operation with the Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. Glass and trasparencies play a big role in this beautiful bulding.

In the Reykjavik suburbs there is my favorite place, maybe in overall. In this place I felt home. Clear sky, limpid air and an amazing silence. All this just few kilometers from the center of the city.

We left Reykjavik and went through the Golden Circle. Infinite roads with an uncontested nature. What I admire most until our first trip here was horizon, in Milan you never see it.

Huge areas with super fluffy musk, walking on it it’s like walk on pillows. What an amazing place! I really can understand why Icelandic people talk about sprites and trolls!

Qui la terra fuma…! Non ci si può abituare all’Islanda!

The ground smokes… in Iceland this is very usual! You can not get used to Iceland!

And this was Gullfoss: one of the most popular attraction in Iceland. A huge waterfall! The rainbow was just the cherry on the cake!

We came back to Iceland searching for Northern Lights – it would be a great present for a 30th birthday! – but unfortunately we didn’t see it but a great starry sky amazed us!

We went to Thingvellir, the most important national park in Iceland. A great and amazing place. Here the tectonic plate of Europe meets the North America plate. Iceland is a magic place full of volcanos also for this reason: a fissure zone running through Iceland. Every year the plates move apart about 5 cm. Here you can literally stand in Europe and touch America! Thingvellir was also the first Viking parliament.

We arrived in Nesjavellir through beautiful roads. Here the ground smokes a lot and there is a geothermal power plant. Very close to it in 2013 was held the Ion hotel. This design hotel won several awards for its refined architecture and for its original and eco-friendly solutions.

In the right night you can admire Northern lights very cozily through the big window.

Last day, we came back to Reykjavik admiring the Thingvallatn lake area, there are amazing views here.

In Reykjanes, near the Keflavik airport, there is the famous Blue Lagoon and the Gunnuhver geothermal area. Here colors of the ground, its sounds, steam and wind are real actors. We are just observers of a great nature.
